After Opie on The Andy Griffith Show and long before his Academy Award for directing A Beautiful Mind, there was Ron Howard's feature film directorial debut--the 1977 road-chase comedy Grand Theft Auto. Howard also starred in and co-wrote (with his father Rance Howard) the production, produced by legendary B-movie maven Roger Corman. In it, lowly Sam Freeman (Howard) and heiress Paula Powers (Nancy Morgan) are teens with an urge to merge--much to the disapproval of Paula's father (Barry Cahill). Their solution? Take daddy's Rolls Royce without his permission for a fast road trip from L.A. to Las Vegas to get hitched. Things get out of hand when dad finds out and offers a reward for their capture, causing a fleet of cars and drivers to hit the highway in hopes of intercepting the duo before they say "I do."
